Your Rights (and Ours)

What is the "legal basis" for using your data?Under data protection laws, we must indicate the "legal basis" on which we use your data. We need your data due to the contractual agreements between you and S.I.C., such as the purchase of a product or service.

For example:

  • Preparing quotes
  • Confirming an order
  • Contractually required information about the service

We may also use your data in a "legitimate interest." This means that we want to offer all customers an optimal and personal service. This applies to surveys, contact with our customer service, visits to our site, newsletters and emails, personal advice, and social media. We may also be legally obliged to use your data, for example, if we suspect a case of fraud.

Who Has Access to Your Data?

Within our company, everyone has access to your data to some extent. Our employees do their utmost to respect your privacy.

In some cases, we also share your data with other parties:

  • Partners: when you purchase a product from us, your data is shared with our partners.
  • Subcontractors: when we want to send you a postal item (such as a magazine), we regularly use a processing company.
  • Data platforms, advertising and media agencies, and research agencies: we occasionally use external companies to help us. In such cases, we give them access to the statistics of our site(s) and our social media accounts.

However, the following always applies: the parties to whom we give access to your data may only use it to provide you with a service on behalf of S.I.C. Your data is in no case sold to third parties.

Where Do We Store Your Data?

Your data may be located in one of these places:

  • Paper archives. The proof of financial transactions (such as invoices) is not only kept digitally but also on paper. We keep them for at least 10 years. These archives are stored securely, under lock and key.
  • Temporary paper prints. Sometimes it is simply more convenient to have a paper copy. If this document contains personal data, it is destroyed after use with a paper shredder.
  • Digital support. We store your data in databases with strict security measures. Therefore, your data is almost always stored within the European Union. In the exceptional case that customer data is transferred to countries outside the European Union, we ensure adequate protection of your privacy. This is officially established for several countries. Some American parties have joined the Privacy Shield, which provides a sufficient level of protection. Or we work with official standard contracts, specially designed to ensure the protection of your privacy.

How Long Do We Retain Your Data?

The duration for which we retain your data depends on the relationship we have with you.

  • If you purchase a product or service. We do not delete your data from our database. We do this for security reasons.
  • If you request information. If you have not yet purchased anything from us and request information about our products or services, we register you in our database. After ten years of inactivity, we delete your data.
  • If you subscribe to a newsletter. You can manage this subscription online. We keep a copy of this subscription in our customer database.
  • If you apply for a job. We delete the data related to your application no later than 1 month after the end of the application process. In some cases, we deviate from this practice, for example, if we want to contact you later for new vacancies. However, we only do this with your consent. If you are hired, we add your application data to your contract.

The tax authorities require us to retain your billing, payment, and order data for 10 years. After that, we only use anonymous data for internal reports.

What Are Your Rights?

You remain in control of your data. Do you want to access your personal data for free or receive a copy of it? Do you want to change, delete, restrict its use, or adjust your preferences for receiving emails? No problem. Let us know by mail or email. You can also object to the use of your data for commercial purposes or indicate that your privacy is more important to you than our interest. In that case, we will reassess the situation.

You can easily unsubscribe from newsletters. Use the link at the bottom of the newsletter. And if you no longer want cookies? You can manage that yourself too. See our section on cookies to find out how.

We want to make sure it is really you. Therefore, we may ask you for additional information to verify your identity. This can happen with unclear requests.
